Hello

ACCESS for ELLs

What is ACCESS for ELLs? ACCESS for ELLs is a state-mandated English language proficiency assessment used to evaluate how well English learners (ELs) are developing their English language skills. This assessment helps ensure that ELs are making progress in acquiring the language skills needed to succeed in academic settings.

Purpose of the ACCESS for ELLs Test:

  • Assess Proficiency: The test measures proficiency in the four key language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

  • Track Progress: It helps track the progress of ELs over time and provides data to support educational planning and interventions.

Test Administration:

  • Timing: ACCESS for ELLs is administered annually, typically between January and February.

  • Format: The test is based on the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) standards and includes both social and instructional language as well as language used in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.

  • Training: Staff administering the test must complete training and certification before the testing window, and certification is required every two years.

Scoring and Interpretation:

  • Score Levels: Scores indicate the student’s level of proficiency in each language domain and overall. Proficiency levels range from Entering to Reaching, with a composite score representing overall language proficiency.

  • Reclassification: Students scoring an overall proficiency level of 4.2 or higher and a composite literacy score of 3.9 or higher are generally considered for reclassification from EL status to former EL (FEL) status.

Resources and Support:

  • Parent Notification: Parents receive information about their child’s ACCESS for ELLs scores and progress.

  • Additional Information: For more details about ACCESS for ELLs, including sample questions and resources, visit the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs website.

Why ACCESS Matters: ACCESS for ELLs is crucial in helping educators provide the appropriate support and instruction tailored to each EL's needs. By regularly assessing language proficiency, schools can ensure that all ELs have the resources and support necessary to achieve academic success.
